Playground equipment installation at Arawa Peace Park

Transforming Play, Building Future

The air in Arawa, Central Bougainville, has recently been filled with something more than just the tropical heat—it’s been buzzing with the sound of power tools, the clinking of steel, and the unmistakable melody of children’s laughter.

From March to April 2025, the Bougainville Sankamap Australia Association Inc, alongside a dedicated coalition of community partners, turned a vision into a reality. We are thrilled to share the journey of our latest playground installation project at the Arawa Peace Park—a project dedicated to our "Little Humans" and the future of our region.

The Journey to Day One

Our mission began with a simple but powerful belief: #kidsdeservebetter. In mid-March, we set the date and sent out a call for support. The response was overwhelming. This wasn't just a construction project; it was a community-led movement.

By April 14th, the atmosphere at our pre-project briefing was electric. With the support of the Arawa Urban Council, the Bougainville Youth Federation, and the Autonomous Bougainville Government, we knew we weren't just building a structure—we were building hope.

Four Days of Grit and Gratitude

The installation week was a masterclass in collaboration.

  • Day 1: The heavy lifting began. Our youth groups rolled up their sleeves for a full day of unpacking, sorting, sanding, and painting. We treated our equipment like "precious cargo," ensuring every bolt and slide was ready for the energetic play it would soon host.
  • Day 2: The "Buzz" was real. Despite the searing heat, the crew moved the playgrounds from the yard to the Peace Park. Seeing the curious faces of children stopping by to watch the progress reminded us why we were there. Playgrounds are more than steel and plastic; they are enablers of growth.
  • Day 3: Efficiency met community spirit. Thanks to a generous "shout out" from Mr. Henry Potabu of Bakaku Construction, who provided a cement mixer, we were able to finish the first two installations ahead of schedule.
  • Day 4: We closed the week with two fully installed playgrounds. The success of this phase was made possible by Absolute Building Construction (ABC) Pty Ltd, who traveled all the way from Buin, and the tireless support of Pastor Kenny and the Arawa Baptist Church.

Why Play Matters in Arawa

Play is a fundamental right, yet many of our children lack safe, dedicated spaces to just be kids. A playground is a classroom without walls. It’s where children learn conflict resolution, physical coordination, and the social bonds that will define the next generation of Bougainvilleans. Seeing the smiles and hearing the laughter at the Peace Park during our soft opening on April 23rd was a humbling reminder that when we invest in play, we invest in peace.

The Road Ahead: Our Vision for a "Safe Zone"

While we have celebrated a successful week, our work is far from finished. The installations are just the foundation. To ensure this space remains a sustainable, safe, and educational haven, we have developed a Phase 2 roadmap:

  • 1. Safety and Security: We plan to fence the playgrounds to keep our little ones safe. Furthermore, we are advocating to transform the adjacent road into a 40km/h zone, complete with a professional zebra crossing. Our goal is to create a "Safe Zone" where parents don't have to worry about traffic.
  • 2. Supporting the Caregivers: A playground isn't just for kids; it’s a community hub. We plan to build seating benches specifically for mothers and guardians to sit and socialize while keeping a watchful eye on their children.
  • 3. Health and Hygiene: To keep our park pristine, we will be installing rubbish bins and building a dedicated toilet block. Respecting our environment starts with providing the infrastructure to keep it clean.
  • 4. Nurturing the Mind: In a move to support a "growth mindset," we are planning a mini kids' library on-site. We want our children to move from the slide to a storybook, fostering a love for literacy in the heart of the park.
  • 5. Sustainability: By installing solar lights, we intend to provide unlimited access and safety even after the sun goes down, ensuring the Peace Park remains a beacon of light for the community—literally and figuratively.

We Need You: Join the Movement

The Bougainville Sankamap Australia Association Inc cannot deliver this vision alone. This project belongs to Arawa. It belongs to the government, the private sector, and every individual who believes that our children are our greatest asset.

Whether you can contribute materials, time, or financial support, your involvement makes a difference. We are incredibly grateful to our partners like the Rotary Club of Frankston, Bougainville Connections, and the local youth associations who have already given so much.

Together, we are creating a legacy. Together, for our Little Humans.
