From Brisbane to Bougainville: Celebrating AROB Day with a Mission
What happens when the spirit of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) meets the heart of "Brisvegas"? You get a celebration of culture, community, and a powerful commitment to the next generation.

AROB Day in "Brisvegas": Community in Action
This June, the Bougainville Sankamap Australia Association Inc hosted a series of landmark events in Brisbane, Queensland, to celebrate AROB Day 2025. While the music, dancing, and fashion were spectacular, the true heartbeat of these gatherings was a singular, vital goal: securing a safe future for the children of Arawa.
The momentum didn’t stop at the ballroom doors. On Saturday, June 14th, we took the celebration to the wider community. AROB Day in Brisbane was a testament to the strength of the Pasifika diaspora and our allies. From the incredible raffle items—including generous contributions from partners like the Brisbane Marriott Hotel—to the tireless work of our volunteers, the day was a resounding success. We owe a massive "Thank You" to our diverse network of supporters who made this possible!
- • Pasifika Women's Alliance
- • Queensland Kairuku Association
- • Papua New Guinea Melpa Women's Association of SE QLD
- • East New Britain Queensland Community Inc
Seeing these organizations come together proves that when we collaborate, we can move mountains (or in this case, build playgrounds!).

The Night of Elegance: The Black & White Ball
On the evening of June 7th, the community gathered for the highly anticipated Black & White Ball 2025. The air was thick with excitement as guests arrived, dressed to the nines, ready to support a cause that hits close to home.
The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the performance by the A.R.O.B Collective. Through traditional dance and powerful storytelling, they transported every guest back to the shores of our beautiful Bougainville Island. It was a reminder of the rich heritage we carry with us, no matter how far from home we may be.
But the Ball was about more than just nostalgia. As we reminded our guests throughout the night: every ticket sold and every donation made goes directly toward building the security fence for the newly installed children’s playground in Arawa.
Why the Fence Matters: Safety First
You might ask: Why a fence? Last month, we celebrated the successful installation of two playgrounds at the Arawa Peace Park. We saw the immediate joy on the faces of our "Little Humans." However, a playground without a fence in a busy urban area like Arawa is an unfinished promise. The funds raised during our Brisbane June events are earmarked specifically for this infrastructure.
A fence provides:
- • Security: Keeping young children from wandering toward the nearby road.
- • Peace of Mind: Allowing mothers and guardians to relax on the newly planned benches, knowing their children are in a contained, safe environment.
- • Longevity: Helping to define the playground as a respected community space that is protected and cared for.

A Global Village Supporting Arawa
It is truly humbling to see the connection between the Arawa Urban Council and the Autonomous Bougainville Government on the ground, and our vibrant community here in Australia. Whether it’s the Rotary Club of Frankston providing international support or local Brisbane families buying raffle tickets, this project is a beautiful example of a "global village" raising a child.
As Janice R. Paru noted during the celebrations, the support for this "very worthy cause" has been overwhelming. It’s not just about the money raised; it’s about the message we are sending to the youth in Bougainville: We see you, we love you, and we are working for you.
What’s Next & Join Us
The "Sankamap" (Sunrise) is just beginning
With the funds from the Black & White Ball and the AROB Day raffle, we are moving straight into the procurement and construction phase for the Arawa Peace Park fence. We are also continuing our push for the "Safe Zone" road markings and the mini kids' library. The energy from our Brisbane events has given us the fuel to keep pushing until every item on our "Phase 2" list is checked off.
If you missed the Ball or the AROB Day celebrations, it’s not too late to get involved! The Bougainville Sankamap Australia Association Inc is always looking for partners, donors, and volunteers who share our vision for a thriving, playful, and safe Bougainville.
Thank you, Brisbane, for showing up, dancing for a cause, and proving that the spirit of Bougainville is alive and well in Australia.
